Acid Arena is a psychedelic FPS built on the Quake III engine. It features 23 maps and 52 colourful characters. It comes with akimbo and alternate fire mods which make the game different from the average deathmatch first-person shooter.
Alien Arena 2007 is a deathmatch FPS with 37 standard maps, power-ups, 8 weapons with alternate fires and a grappling hook. It also features Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, and All Out Assault game modes. Alien Arena also has bots for offline play.
America's Army is a realistic tactical multiplayer first-person shooter. Gameplay is mission based, each map having its own set of objectives. Players only have one life per round, so it is important that players are tactical and work as a team. Training missions are available which give the player experience and greater weapon selection.
BZFlag is an open-source multiplayer 3D first-person tank battle game. The basic objective is to destroy opponents' tanks. There are also two other gameplay styles, Capture The Flag (CTF) in which tanks try to pick up an opponent's flag and bring its's home base, or a style called "Rabbit Chase" in which the objective is to have every hunter tank try to destroy a particular white tank, called the "rabbit."
Control Monger is a unique FPS in which players control robots. Players play either in team mode or in a free for all mode. Strategy is required at all times to implement the skills of each of the different types of bot to take the best advantage of the map. Three modes of gameplay are currently available, death match, king of the hill or a frantic race to capture the flag.
D-Day: Normandy is a team-based standalone Quake II modification. Two teams battle each other, each team having 9 different player classes. Different maps have different objectives, sometimes not all of which are kill-based. The game features air strikes, three different stances and the ability to aim down the sight of the weapon instead of a crosshair.
Enemy Territory Fortress (ETF) is a futuristic multiplayer FPS. It has 10 distict classes and many maps. Gameplay is generally based around Capture the Flag, however there are map specific game modes as well. ETF also supports bots. The game is fast-paced and the graphics are detailed and colorful. The free game Enemy Territory is required to play this game.
F.E.A.R. Combat is the complete multiplayer component of F.E.A.R. and includes all the updates, additional official maps and additional official game modes. F.E.A.R. Combat users can play against the owners of the retail version of F.E.A.R. as well as the other F.E.A.R. Combat users. This is a top-class FPS with the latest graphics and lighting. This FPS has popular game modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Last Man Standing, Control and Capture All. F.E.A.R Combat features 22 multiplayer maps, 12 different weapons and the capability to download user created content.
Hidden and Dangerous is an ex-retail strategic squad based single player shooter. You choose a squad of 8 skilled commandos, choose their weaponry and choose up to 4 of them for each of the 30+ missions. Commandos can be controlled by a map view or by a first-person view. Tactical play is necessary to pass missions, and the player needs to position the squad and use stealth to eliminate the enemies.
Legends is a first-person shooter very similar to Tribes, but with better graphics. Players have their own jetpack to launch them up in the air, giving another dimension to gameplay. Game modes include Arena, CAH, CTF, Duel and War.
Nexuiz is a futuristic first-person shooter built on a vastly improved Quake I engine. Nexuiz focuses on bringing the FPS genre back to the basics with quick battles and balanced weaponry. There are 9 weapons and 24 official maps, as well as 15 player models. Nexuiz can be played in multiplayer as well as with bots.
Paintball 2.0 is a paintball first-person shooter. It features capture the flag, elimination, siege, and deathmatch modes. Paintball 2 is based on the Quake 2 engine.
Sauerbraten is an open-source major redesign of the Cube FPS engine with 3D floors, new weapons and better graphics. Like Cube, map/geometry editing can be done in-game. Sauerbraten has both multiplayer and single-player modes. There are two types of single-player mode, "SP" mode in which a player plays through a level or "DM", deathmatch mode in which you have to battle off respawning monsters.
Savage: "The Battle For Newerth" is a cross-genre ex-retail game that combines aspects of real-time strategy and first-person games. The full retail version of the game has been released as freeware. The game has 2 teams. Each team has one commander, who plays the game like a Real-Time Strategy game. The other 1 to 31 players on the team are the soldiers, and they play it like a First-Person Shooter. Most of their job involves killing the enemies, but they can also help build buildings and gather resources.
Tribes is an ex-retail multiplayer sci-fi first-person shooter. There are several classes, troop transport vehicles and 5 distinct game modes. One of the defining elements of Tribes is the jetpack. With a press of a button, the player is accelerated upwards. A unique and important aspect of Tribes is the ability to wear "packs" which enhances the player in a certain way. Only one can be worn at a time, so the player must choose the one which will help them in their goal.
Tremulous is a game which blends a team based FPS with elements of a real-time strategy. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. Other structures provide base defence, healing functions and much more. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades. Aliens are able to evolve into a new class.
True Combat: Elite is a mulitplayer modern total modification to the free game Enemy Territory. Normal games require the terrorist team to plant a bomb and the spec-ops team to defend. Each player has only one life per round, making the game quite similar to Counter-Strike and requiring teams to be tactical and strategic. The game also has a "bodycount" mode in which players re-spawn and the teram with the highest kills wins. There are no crosshairs, however the player can use the iron sights on their gun to aim. It features extremely detailed graphics, a balanced team specific set of real-world weapons and lag compensation.
Warsow is a cel-shaded eSport oriented FPS. It features fast-paced gameplay focused on trick jumps. It also features a complete power-up system including weak and strong fire mode for each weapon. It has deathmatch, CTF, midair and duel modes, with optional one-hit kill "instagib" mode. Bots are also available.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a standalone, objective based multiplayer FPS. Each of the five character classes is critical to a team's victory or defeat on the battlefield. Players can gain rank and level up skills by gaining XP. The game comes with 6 large maps, each with it's own set of objectives for both the Axis and Allies. Many more maps can be downloaded.
