AnalogX Scratch

AnalogX Scratch allows you to scratch audio samples, in the same style a DJ scratches a record. The user can load up a WAV for a loop sound (such as drums) and a WAV for the sound to scratch. It has several controls to vary the technique,turntable speed, hand speed, and playback speed. AnalogX Scratch can output a WAV file of the scratch.

AnalogX TapTempo

AnalogX TapTempo is a tool to find the BPM (Beats Per Minute) of a song by pressing the space bar in time with the music.

Audacity

Audacity is an audio recorder and editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files and more. It can be used to edit sounds with cut, copy and paste, mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. There are many built-in effects including Bass Boost, Wah-Wah, Noise Removal, Phaser and Fading and it also supports VST plug-in effects with the VST enabler plugin.

Buzz

Buzz is a modular software music studio with a plug-in based machine view and a multiple pattern sequencer tracker. It works with "Generators" such as synthesisers and samples, and effects. VST instruments and effects can be used through adapters.

KRISTAL

KRISTAL Audio Engine is a powerful multi-track recorder, audio sequencer and mixer. It is designed as a modular system. The main application provides a mixing console, while the audio sequencer, live audio input and so on are loaded as separate plug-ins. KRISTAL Audio Engine is freeware for personal, educational and non-commercial use. It features 16 audio tracks, 3-band parametric EQ, 2 VST insert slots per channel and 3 VST master effect slots as well as 4 KRISTAL plug-in slots.

LUNA

LUNA is an easy to use music creation software. You can record audio and record and play MIDI with VST instruments. There are four "racks" where you can load up audio, VST instruments and VST effects. If you want a free piece of software to start learning music production, I would recommend this program.

MilkyTracker

If you're into those cool old-school chiptunes, then you should check out MilkyTracker. MilkyTracker is a tracker-style music program, similar to the popular DOS tracker Fast Tracker II. It can open many different types of tracker files. This software is portable, meaning it can be run off a USB drive.

MixMeister BPM Analyzer

MixMeister BPM Analyzer is a program to determine the exact BPM (beats per minute) of almost any song. MixMeister BPM Analyzer supports dragging and dropping files and allows you to sort your music list by Title, Artist, or BPM. You can update ID3 tags in your music files with exact BPM information, print BPM reports for your entire music collection or export BPM counts for use in other programs like Excel or music databases.

ReBirth

ReBirth is a software synthesizer made by Propellerhead which has been made availiable for free download. ReBirth emulates two Roland TB-303 synthesizers, a Roland TR-808 and Roland TR-909 drum machines at once. There are also mixers, a pattern controlled filter and some standard effects like digital delay, compressor and quad-input distortion. There are also lots of mods to download to give you many more sounds.

TuxGuitar

TuxGuitar is a free program that can view, play and edit Guitar Pro tabs. It can create, edit and print guitar tablature and standard notation. It imports and exports gp3, gp4 and gp5 files. There is a fretboard view, a keyboard view and various effects such as bends, slides, vibrato, hammer-on/pull-off etc.

Wavosaur

Wavosaur is an audio editor with VST plugin support, with virtual VST racks that can be tweaked to change the playing audio in real-time. With it's multiple document inferface, you can edit numerous files in the one session. It features pitch-shifting, bit-depth convertion, different types of fade in/out, auto-trimming and batch processing. It also features 2D and 3D frequency spectrum analysis and MIDI controller support.
